FERA was one of only four experts who had been invited to give a presentation before the European Parliament Working Group on Copyright on January 12.

On the question of the importance of copyright from the artists’ perspective and what we wanted from them as lawmakers, FERA advocated that they should look at contract law in particular, and stressed the fact that if we could operate by licensingrights instead of transferring them directors would have a better bargaining position and a better tool for enforcing the contracts, because the producers will not permanently own the exploitation rights to the films. This seemed to find favour among several members who were eagerly looking for ways to strengthen the position of artists/creators vis-a-vis other stakeholders.
